General Information
· Please help your child practice his/her letters, sounds, high frequency words daily! Mastery of these skills directly impacts your child’s success with both reading and writing.
· All Special Olympics paperwork was due on October 20, 2016. If your child did not turn in a physical form completed by a Physician by the date mentioned above they will not be able to participate in the Basketball Olympics games on December 1, 2016.
· All field trip money is due by November 10, 2016.
Language Focus
· Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage when writing and speaking.
· Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing.
Writing Focus
· Use a combination of drawings, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are writing about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book.
· With guidance and support from adults, respond to questions and suggestions from peers and add details to strengthen writing as needed.
Reading Focus
· Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about grade 1 topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.
· Produce complete sentences when appropriate to task and situation.
· Actively engage in group reading activities with purpose and understanding.
· Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequence of letters
Math Focus
· Write numbers 1-20
· Understanding the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality.
· Count to answer “how many”.
· Identify whether the numbers of objects in one group is greater then, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g. by using matching and counting strategies. Include groups with up to ten objects.
Science Focus
· Understanding the physical properties of Earth materials that make them useful in different ways.
· Summarize the physical properties of Earth materials, including rocks, minerals, soils, and water that make them useful in different ways.
· Compare the properties of soil samples from different places relating to their capacity to retain water, nourish, and support the growth of certain plants.
