Mrs. Denning’s Newsletter
August 08, 2016
Welcome to another wonderful and exciting school year. We had a busy first week of school getting to know one another, learning procedures and routines and learning our new school environment. This letter will serve as our first newsletter about what is going on in the classroom/school. There is a lot to tell and explain, and it is important that parents and students know the routine and procedures for the classroom to run smoothly.
Classroom/School News
Remind: If you have not yet signed up for Remind please do so as soon as possible. It is a wonderful way to receive updates in a quick and easy text format. Thank you.
Baggie Books - Your child will bring a leveled book home each night, Monday-Thursday. They are to read this book and answers questions about the text using the comprehension handouts that are located inside your child’s Baggie Book. After reading, please log the amount of time and title of each book read. Then, sign the form to indicate its completion. Students will return the book the next day in the bag provided. Thanks so much for your help in ensuring these books are returned each day!
Volunteering 2016 – 2017 - We are so happy that you want to volunteer at North Forest Pines Elementary! In order to chaperone on field trips or help out in your child's classroom or elsewhere in the school, all adults must register and be an approved volunteer. The volunteer system is open during business hours Mondays through Friday. Registration to be an approved volunteer must be through a WCPSS computer.
BIS Store Accepting Donations - NFP students earn tickets when they are modeling appropriate behavior in class, in the hallway, in the cafeteria, at recess, etc. Students may then use those tickets at the SOAR Store to purchase items. The SOAR Store is accepting items that are in good condition. They ask that items are clean and have all pieces/parts intact. The SOAR Store cannot accept clothing items, hats, and candy/food. Typical donations include (but are not limited to): school supplies, books, toys, stuffed animals, games, puzzles, stickers, etc. If interested, please label donations with "SOAR Store." Donations may be dropped off at the front office. Thank you for your consideration!!
Homework: There will be a weekly homework packet sent home each Monday. Students will turn in the completed packet on Friday of each week. Homework will consist of reading, spelling, and math. Please be sure that the completed homework packet is turned in every Friday.
Conduct/Behavior - Students are expected to follow the school rules and procedures. You will know how your students are performing daily through the daily behavior log located in your child’s folder. You are expected to sign this daily (this includes Fridays). ·Contact Information - Please be sure to keep your contact information updated. There may be a time when I need to be in touch with you and need current phone numbers. I can be contacted at school (919-570-2220) as well as through email ([email protected]).
Monday Folders - Each Monday students will bring home a Monday folder. This will have important information from the office, as well as from the teacher. It will also have student work from the week before. Please be sure to go through this folder each week so you will be up to date. J Also, please remove all student work, this is yours to keep. ·
Supplies - You should have already received a supply list for the year. Thank you for your support with supplies.
Dress Code - Please be aware that students who do not comply with the dress code will be sent home. Please also make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the day’s activities (for instance sneakers on the day your child has P.E. class)
Transportation - Please be sure that you know what bus your child will be riding. Bus routes are available online. Also, if you will be picking up your child you will need to have a carpool tag. If your child will ride carpool only occasionally, you may want to go ahead and get a carpool tag (otherwise you will have to report to the office to sign your child out). After the first few days if you go through the carpool line and do not have a tag you will be asked to park and go to the office. When in the carpool line we ask that you please stay in your car. If your student’s transportation changes you will need to submit this in writing in order for it to be honored. In addition, students will not be checked out after 2:00 pm for any reason.
Attendance/Arrival Time - Our instructional day begins at 7:45 am. Students may arrive no earlier than 7:15 am. Please make sure that all students are here every day and on time. If a student must miss a day it will be unexcused unless a note is provided from the approved excused reason list found in the Student Handbook.
Lunch/Snack - Our lunch time begins at 10:00 am. Your child’s lunches can be paid in advance in the cafeteria (which makes our lives easier) or online. Lunch prices are $2.25 and $.40 for reduced price. ·Breakfast - is $1.25 and $.30 for reduced price. Breakfast will end at 7:35 am. Students who arrive after that will not be able to get breakfast. Students will be expected to provide their own snack daily. You will not be sending in snack for the whole class. According to the new Wake County Wellness Policy children should not be bringing in food that has “minimal nutritional value”. Please be sure that snacks are things such as fruit, raw veggies, peanut butter and crackers, etc. Do not send sweets. Food will not be heated up. Also, make sure that the snack is manageable (i.e. chips and salsa may spill, peanuts have lots of clean up, etc.) Along with this policy I will ask that parents check with me before sending in anything for birthdays or other special occasions.
Specials - Our specials work on a fixed schedule (most of the time) but you will want to keep your specials calendar handy in order to know what days your child will have P.E., Music, Art, Technology, Media and Science. This schedule will change every time we track out. When track 4 is out, we will be on a 4 day rotation. Please be sure students wear appropriate clothing and shoes for P.E. Students are expected to bring their library books each day. Students can check-out books during the day, even if we do not have it as a special that day.
Grading System - We will continue to implement the Standard-Based Grading system, using a scale of 1,2,3, and 4. Please see the attachment for more information. Papers not formally graded will have “P” for practice.
PE Classroom Project Request - Hi Friends and Families of NFP! I want to make sure my students have the materials they need to succeed. I've created a classroom project request at DonorsChoose.org, an award-winning charity. I'm asking for donations of any size to help my kids. If you know anyone who is passionate about fitness and/or education, please pass this along. Your donation will brighten my students' school year, and you'll get photos and a thank you from our class.
